"She was no threat to him" says attorney for woman tasored by McAlester Police

McALESTER — Those are the words the attorney representing a woman who was tasered at point blank range by a McAlester police officer while she stood handcuffed with her hands behind her.

In a police video, McAlester Police Officers Sterling Taylor is seen firing a Taser within at point blank range at Nakina Williams, 28, of Okmulgee, while she stands with her hands cuffed behind her back. McAlester Police officer Charles Rogers, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 97, along with other officers can also be seen with the woman.

McAlester Attorney Jeremy Beaver is representing Williams and he said she was the victim of a crime.

“Ms. Williams is approximately four feet eleven inches tall. At the time she was shot Ms. Williams was handcuffed behind her back and her hands were raised to nearly shoulder height behind her and placed on a counter.”

He said (in court records)Officer Taylor claimed it was necessary to shoot her with the Taser because she had spit at him and he was afraid she was going to do it again,” Beaver said.

“Ms. Williams posed no threat to Officer Taylor at that moment,” he said. “Serious bodily harm to herself or others was an impossibility. Despite this Officer Taylor removed his Taser, placed it inches from her chest and fired as four other officers watched. Metal prongs from the Taser buried beneath Ms. Williams’ skin and into her chest muscles which were torn from the impact. Officer Taylor then electrically shocked Ms. Williams for five full seconds causing her to scream in pain.”
