Shinn at 3 p.m.: Penalties starting to hurt

NORMAN — AMES, Iowa — As victories go, it's hard to have many complaints about Oklahoma's 35-20 win over Iowa State on Saturday.

It improved the Sooners to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12 Conference. But a disturbing trend has begun. OU was penalized seven times for 71 yards against Iowa State.

The penalties ran OU's total in the last two games to 12 for 100 yards. That total isn't out of hand, but when you consider Iowa State and Notre Dame combined for 3 penalties for 15 (Notre Dame 1-5, Iowa State 2-10), the issue is easy to see.

"They penalties were frustrating because they kept drives going for them," OU safety Tony Jefferson said on Saturday.  He's right.

Five of Iowa State's 19 first downs came via Sooner penalties. Three of those were on OU's secondary in the first half.

"It was pretty frustrating," cornerback Demontre Hurst said. "I guess we were being too physical. We got a couple holding calls and I know I got a hands to the face call. I don't want to downgrade anything we did, but we have to cut down on the penalties."
