J.L. Hampton


J.L. Hampton, 79, of McAlester, died Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at his home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hugh Low Cemetery in Scipio with the Rev. A. L. Mullins officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born April 1, 1930, in Pecos, Texas, he was the son of Jesse and Elva (Pearce) Hampton. He grew up in Buffalo Valley.

He lived in Lubbock, Texas and worked for the State of Texas as a truck driver, retiring in 1982 after 27 years of service.

He married Freda Louise Ford on Oct. 19, 1949, in Lake City, Ark. He worked at Mitchell Manor Nursing Home for 10 years.

He was a member of Hilltop Pentecostal Church.

He enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He married Stella Ellis in 1988 in McAlester.

Survivors include daughters, Shirley Burk, of McAlester, Diana Vaughn and husband, Joe, Clarksville, Ark., Donneda Trent and husband, Dan, Clarksville, Ark., and Elva Perkins and husband, Buddy, Hartman, Ark.

Also, sons, Jesse Hampton and wife, Diana, Fort Worth, Texas, and Harley Hampton and wife, Pearl, of McAlester; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Freeman, of Hartshorne, Alice Campbell, of Durant, and Twila Waggoner and husband, Jim, of Hartshorne, and a brother, Buddy Hampton and wife, Betty, Conway, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Elva Hampton; wives, Freda Louise Hampton, in 1986, and Stella Hampton, in 2005; son, Clifton Wayne Hampton; granddaughter, Wanda Burk-Zertuche; brothers, Athel Hampton and Evertt Hampton; son-in-law, Jerry Burk.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandsons.
