Joy Lorene Kennamer
Joy Lorene Kennamer, 84, formerly of McAlester, died Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at Yukon.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Kevin Meridith officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery under direction of Bishop Funeral Service.
Born Dec. 16, 1925, near Antlers, to Charles E. and Elizabeth Harris Tabor, she graduated from Greenwood, Ark., High School in the class of 1944. Shortly after graduation, she moved to McAlester, where she began working at Woolworth’s and met a young marine, M.J. “Ken” Kennamer. They were married on Dec. 23, 1948, at the First Baptist Church in McAlester.
She was a marine’s wife, traveling with her husband until his retirement in 1960, when they returned to McAlester to make their home. She enjoyed being a mother and homemaker. She also enjoyed helping in the family business when her husband owned and operated Ken’s Tune Up and later owned K.T. Auto Parts Warehouse.
She was a former member of the former Trinity Baptist Church where she enjoyed fellowship with the church congregation and helping with activities. She was also a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Fleet Reserve Association.
In 2007, she moved to Mustang and later to Yukon to be closer to her family.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Debra Kennamer McElroy and husband, Eddie, of Tuttle; a son and daughter-in-law, Jim Kennamer and wife, Susan, of Raleigh, N.C.; five grandchildren, Sean McElroy, Lauren McElroy Walls, Mary Kennamer, Karen Kennamer, John Kennamer.
And, a brother, James B. Tabor, of McAlester; a sister-in-law, Polly Tabor, of Oklahoma City, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ken Kennamer; her parents; a brother, Kelly Tabor, and a sister, Lois Tabor Nave.
