Sestos B. Mathiews

Sestos B. Mathiews, 94, of McAlester, died Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, at McAlester Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brumley-Mills Chapel with the Rev. Tom Ratliff officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.

Born June 22, 1915, in Hartford, Ark., she was the daughter of Arnold “Arnie” and Minnie Bird (Harris) Srum. She spent her childhood, through the 8th grade, in Gowen, then moved to Houston, where she graduated from high school.

She returned to the Lynnwood area, south of Gowen, and lived virtually all her adult life there. She married Bolin Mathiews on Dec. 21, 1935, in Cambria.

She enjoyed gardening and always had a large vegetable garden, which she used for canning and cooking for her family. She had also belonged to the Home Extension and enjoyed quilting.

She was associated with the Christian Church.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Nena Mathiews, of McAlester, Bartley and Wilma Mathiews, of Yukon, and Jerry and Ann Mathiews, of McAlester; seven grandchildren, LaDonna Campbell, Chris Anderson and her husband, John, Eddie Mathiews and his wife, Cindy, Sandi Roberts, Debbie Sibola and her husband, Sam, Carole Clagg and her husband, Shawn, and Timothy Mathiews.

Also, 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and one sister and brother-in-law, Wanda Jane and Chester Lowe, Tampa, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her father, Arnie Srum; her mother, Minnie Bird (Srum) Wilkerson; her husband, Bolin Mathiews; a grandson, John David Mathiews; two sisters, Essie Easley and Josephine Mathiews, and a brother, Earl Wilkerson.

Pallbearers will be John Anderson, Sam Sibola, Tim Mathiews, Eddie Mathiews, Parker Mathiews and Shawn Craig.
